About Lisa Movius Online

Lisa Movius Online is primarily a collection of original articles written by Lisa Movius, and also contains resources on and links to her primary beat of modern art and culture in China and particularly Shanghai. It was created to serve three purposes: to archive Lisa's articles for perusal by interested parties, be they editors, researchers, or the generally public; to disseminate information about Shanghai's resurgent indigenous culture, particular alternative music, contemporary art, theater and literature; and to provide an update on Lisa's goings-on for her friends and family around the world.

The site is divided into four sections. The front page, or "News", is devoted to what's new on the site and in Shanghai, with information on worthwhile upcoming events in Shanghai, links to Lisa's most recent articles, recent photos, and new additions to the site. "Articles" contains Lisa's entire body of work since 1998, indexed by subject matter and by date. "About", in addition to this introduction, features media about and interviews with Lisa Movius. "Links" is self-explanatory, but also contains assorted Shanghai FAQs that Lisa occasionally writes to address inquiries received.

About Lisa Movius

Lisa Movius is a writer, journalist, critic, consultant and artist. A proud New Shanghainese since 1998, she has chronicled Shanghai from a variety angles and at a depth that few other writers have. As a business and fashion journalist, she plumbed the evolution of China's luxury, retail and design landscape over its headiest years. As an arts writer, she has rocked the front row of the emerging if beleaguered Shanghai indie scene for over a decade and observed Chinese contemporary go from a world of starving artists to international celebrities - and written about it all.

Movius arrived in Shanghai in October 1998, and quickly sought out the local rock scene, and her musician friends introduced her to the then-nascent art world. Realizing that Shanghai was experiencing the beginnings of a cultural blossoming that few knew about, with zero attention in either the Chinese or English-language press, she started pestering publications to cover it. A beat - and a writer - was born.

In 1999, Movius was hired as the Shanghai Editor for the now-defunct online lifestyle and city magazine ChinaNow, a position she held until spring 2001 and that allowed her to cover some heady things like Shanghai's first international biennale in 2000. She then worked at the business newswire Interfax, covering the energy and metals sectors, until going freelance in 2002.

Since then, she has continued to write extensively on the arts - particularly the visual and performing arts, music, film and design - as well as social issues, youth culture, history and travel, and the fashion , apparel and textile industries. She has contributed to several dozen different international, regional and local publications.

While simultaneously freelancing, Movius worked as correspondent and bureau chief for WWD from April 2004 to December 2009. In that role, she has covered all aspects of the fashion industry, from luxury and branding to manufacturing, trade and retail, interviewing everyone from designers and celebrities to textile manufacturers and shop keepers.

Fluent in Mandarin and studying Wu-Shanghainese, Movius has largely assimilated in Shanghai. She is an outspoken advocate of foreign nationals living in China (or anywhere) respecting and learning and not otherizing the people and culture of their host country, and is a frequent media commentator on Shanghainese culture - as well as her beats of arts and fashion.

In 2010, Movius has returned to dedicated freelancing and to working on her book about the Shanghainese avant-garde. In addition, she continues to write about the arts and the apparel industry for myriad publications. She has also begun to use her niche industry journalist skills to explore the new topics of environmental issues as well as the health care, food, pet, education and publishing industries.

Movius also freelances as a consultant about the arts, the apparel and luxury business, and Chinese youth culture. She additionally offers food, shopping and arts tours of Shanghai.
